In brief:

From Freshwater, head towards Freshwater Bay. A3055

Turn left on B3399 towards Newport. Then second left on Wilmingham Lane. GR357,865.

After about 2miles, turn right on B3401 towards Thorley and Wellow. Pass through Thorley on on to Wellow. Turn right in Wellow opposite large bus shelter. (Upper Wellow Road).

Continue east. Through dip and past large barn. Lane drops gently downhill, through a slight dip and past riding stables. Rejoin B3401 on corner. Continue east towards Newbridge.

Newbridge: Village shop and post office. Orchards holiday park. Seats on green.

Drop down steep hill and cross stream at the bottom. Turn sharp left immediately over bridge.

Lane bears right and up a short hill. (Photo above). Continue east towards Five Houses. Cross Elm Lane at GR 426,878. Continue to Five Houses. Turn sharp left and head due north.

Cross main A3054 at Heberdens (turn right, then left to cross). CARE!!! Follow narrow lane NNE.

Lane ends at grassy triangle. This is almost a cross roads. (Right, then immediately left). [CAUTION, visibility is bad]. Follow cycleroute to Newtown. Easy ride through NT woodland. Sea views on right over Newtown Harbour. Newtown harbour is a nature reserve.

Through Newtown village, pass old town hall and drop down hill to cross causeway and bridge. Continue to T junction.

Turn right (due south). Continue to junction by petrol station on A3054. Turn right.

Pass through Shalfleet village. (New Inn on right, Church on left). Turn next left after Church. Warlands Lane. Small shop on left in farmyard. Follow lane to T junction near Ningwood.

Turn left, then first right. B3401. GR402,882. Follow this road due west through Wellow and Thorley. (Beyond Wellow you are retracing your outward route).

Turn left at T junction to return to Freshwater. Alternatively, turn right for Yarmouth.

Although the roads and lanes on these routes are not usually dangerous in themselves, road users can create hazards. Cyclists should take every precaution to stay safe.
