HOME PAGE

This route includes several miles of A class road.

From West Wight Sports Centre, turn right out of car park and immediately right again. A3055. Follow this road to Freshwater Bay.

At lifeboat station, turn left up steep hill. A3055. Climb Afton Down. Sea views to your right, chalk downland to your left.

NOTE: The to of this climb is very close to the cliff edge. There have been extensive engineering works to prevent the loss of the road. At the time of writing, the road is closed.

After Afton Down, there is a descent into Compton Chine. The road climbs again over a second hill, then a long descent to the car park at Hanover Point. There is frequently an ice cream van in the car park during the summer months.

Continue on A3055 which is the coast road. (Known as the Military Road). Ignore turning to Brook. Take next turning to Brighstone. (If you cross the viaduct, you have gone too far).

Follow lane to outskirts of village. Turn right at first crossroads. Pass old mill buildings, ignore first left. Pass radio mast at Thorncross. Take next left at farm buildings. GR438816. This lane zigzags across fields. Pass fishing ponds and take next right toward Yafford. GR443,821.

Pass water mill. Take next left at T junction. (Up the hill).

Ignore first right. Pass Wolverton Manor on your left. Continue to T junction. GR455,823. Turn left towards Shorwell. Turn left again when you reach the village. B3399.

Shorwell: Small shop and pub. Turn left at miniroundabout. Follow B3399 to Brighstone

Brighstone: Shop, tea shop and picturesque buildings. Continue through village on B3399. This is quite a large village.

Continue on B3399 Through Mottistone (NT manor house) and Hulverstone. Beyond Hulverstone, the road bears right above Brook village and climbs the Downs (Brook Hill). Note Church built on the hill to your right. In season, the left side of the road is smothered in rhododendrons.

Descend the other side of the Downs. Bear left at fork and meet more major road at T junction. Turn left up the hill. (This is still the B3399).

In the next dip, turn right at farm buildings onto 'Broad Lane'. There are goof views to the north from this lane. Long descent to Thorley.

Turn left at crossroads by Thorley Church. Head west for about 0.5 miles. B3401.

Turn right at next T junction. Now heading north. Follow through to T junction with A 3054. Turn left to Yarmouth. You are now right on the north coast.

Yarmouth: Harbour, ferry terminal, shops, cafes, etc.

From Yarmouth: Alternative route 1 to Freshwater. Stay east of the river and take the road south beside the school. Wiggle left by garage, then right into Station Road. At old station, turn right on bridleway that uses the old railway track. This returns to Freshwater.

From Yarmouth: Alternative route 2 to Freshwater. Cross bridge over river and continue on main road. Wiggle sharp left and begin climb. The hill gets steep. At the top of the hill, turn left into Pixley Hill. Follow this road to Freshwater. Note: The upper part of this hill can be dangerous to cyclists as there is a steep retaining wall next to the road and some vehicles need to pass very closely. The footpath is a safer 'push'.
