We think the Island is an ideal location for cyclists. There is a network of quiet lanes and way-marked bridleways. There is a well signposted ‘round-island’ road route. Bikes are carried free of charge* on the vehicle ferry routes.

Off road routes

Many off road routes are available. They are well signposted and interconnect. They are shown clearly on the maps listed above. Selected off-road routes are also shown on smaller maps available from the Tourist Offices.

Most of these routes are bridleways. Courteous consideration of other users is essential. Always follow the off-road cycling code.

A few West Wight routes are emerging on this site. Most are currently absent or draft.

 

Road routes

Few Island roads are busy. There is a network of lanes for enjoyable cycling away from main routes.

A full ‘round the Island’ route is well signposted.

Books of suggested routes are available from tourist offices.

Cycleways

A number of cycleways follow some of the Island’s old railway lines. Routes include: Newport to Cowes, Yarmouth to Freshwater & Newport to Sandown.

Contact tourist offices for information. A pamphlet showing the ‘round Island’ route is available. Off road maps can be purchased. There are two small books of suggested rides.

·        Wightlink car and passenger ferry [will carry bikes]

* On the date this web page was first produced, bikes travel free on Red Funnel and Wightlink car ferries. Bikes are not carried on the Red Jet passenger service. We suggest that you contact the ferry operator before your journey to check.
