  • At the top of the hill, the road bears sharp left by the sub Post Office. You should continue straight on towards the Church and Red Lion Pub. Take care at this junction, cars sometimes cut the corner and it is not your right of way.
  • The road becomes narrow to the right of the Church 347,873 and drops down hill towards the river. Cross the causeway to where the bridleway crosses. This was the old railway crossing. The cottage was the Level Crossing Keeper's. 348,872.
  • Turn left in front of the cottage and along the track.

Note: This track is a bridleway and is enormously valued by local cyclists, riders and walkers. Please be courteous to other users.

Yar Estuary and Bike Isle of Wight

Views of the Yar Estuary with wading birds. You may see an egret or a heron. Red squirrels live in the adjacent woodland. Primroses in the spring.

  • This track is the old railway route to Newport. Unfortunately, it is only open to a point just beyond Yarmouth. The track passes through woodland and along the edge of the Yar Estuary.
  • Follow the track as far as Yarmouth Station. Just before the station, there is an exit point that brings you into the back roads of Yarmouth.
  • Follow the road and turn first left. Continue to garage. Note views of estuary and the old tide mill on your left. Follow the road to the right. Continue to main road by the school.
  • This is the A3054. Cross straight over with care. This brings you into the centre of Yarmouth where there are numerous pubs, cafes, etc. There is also a tourist information office. The ferry from Lymington docks here.

RETURN TRIP

You could return by the same route. The views will be different and the tide will have changed! The views across the estuary will now be towards Tennyson Down.

Alternatively, pick up the main A3054 east out of Yarmouth. This road runs parallel with the shore.

  • Take right Turn 'Thorley Road'. This is the first through road after you leave the 30mph limit.
  • Follow this road, do not turn off to Thorley. Straight on (now called Wilmingham Lane).
  • Eventually join B3399 at T junction. Turn right towards Freshwater. Afton Park Nursery & Cafe on your left.
  • Join A3055 at skew cross-roads. Turn right and continue to Freshwater.
